To Lose Weight, Stand, Don’t Sit

The difference in calorie burn is small, but researchers are convinced that standing rather than sitting could help keep the weight off. Science Daily reports on research conducted at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, which  analyzed results from 46 studies with 1,184 participants, average age 33. Ready? The envelope please… The researchers found that standing burned 0.15 calories per minute more than sitting, so by standing rather than sitting for six hours a day, a 143-pound person would burn an extra 54 calories a day, which in one year would keep 5.5 pounds off our bodies. Wait, there’s more. The researchers suspect that they are lowballing the weight loss, because the studies analyzed failed to consider that standing people tend to move their bodies more than sitting people and are more likely to walk to a file cabinet or a co-workers space.
