Study Ties French Fries To Early Death

OK, it doesn’t actually say french fries can lead to an early death, but the news is not good. That Washington Post reports on a study published this month by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition that looked at potato consumption of 4,440 American participants, aged 45 to 79 years, over an eight-year period, noting who ate fried and unfried potatoes, and tracking links between potato eating and mortality. The data showed that people who ate “fried potatoes two or more times a week “were at an increased risk of mortality,” and the increase was significant, basically twice the risk of people who didn’t eat french fries. The good news? Eating unfried potatoes was not associated with increased risk of premature death. And yes, the National Potato Council contests the validity of the study, claiming that the “study has significant methodological flaws, which have led to misinterpretations of the data.”

  1. Its not the potatoes, its the crappy type of oil they are fried in.
