Heavy Drinker Or Alcoholic? That Is The Question

Is this good news? The NAlcohol-by-Mark-Turner-Creative-Commonsew York Times reports that a new study of results from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health suggests that nine out of 10 people who drink too much are not addicts, and can change their behavior with sufficient prompting. It could be good news, except the Times also reports that excessive drinking, the kind practiced by non-alcoholics as well as alcoholics, results in 88,000 deaths a year, from causes that include alcohol poisoning and liver disease, to car accidents and other accidental deaths. Here’s another question: When does drinking become excessive? Quite soon, actually. For men, the Times reports, excessive drinking is achieved with five or more drinks in one sitting or 15 drinks or more during a week. For women, it’s four drinks on one occasion or eight drinks over the course of a week. Yes, quite soon, so soon in fact, that about 29 percent of the population meets the definition for excessive drinking, while 90 percent of those people do not meet the definition of alcoholism. What can those people do about the problem? The government funded report suggests that they should drink less.

  1. I am a recovering alcoholic who is just beginning my 4th month of sobriety. I had to laugh when I read the conclusion that “they should drink less”. I would love to know how much the government paid for this study. The definition of a true alcoholic has been well known and documented since the mid 1930’s. All one needs to do is read the first 164 pages of the AA hand book and you’ll know all there is to know about alcoholism and how to recover from it. Just another example of wasteful use of our tax dollars.

  2. I,as a sober recovering Alcoholic. Once you tried to change or control your drinking-Then your in trouble.I tried to change how, when and where I drank .The results were nil. I ended drinking the same and worse. It took a certain fellowship whose guidelines I followed, then a miracle happened. I haven’t needed to pick up a single drink in years. This article will do more harm than good.It was a waste of good money.

  3. I am sober for 1 year and 11 months since i suffered from mild stroke last December the 13th 2012 never drink any alcoholic beverage since then it happens i feel so good now it’s just my mind over matter works.
