Testosterone Keeps Men (Relatively) Honest
Contrary to the common conviction that testosterone makes men just want to win, a new study shows that the hormone actually chills self-interest. It’s true. The Atlantic reports on the research, which applied a testosterone gel to 46 men and a placebo to another 45. The next day, the men played a game: roll a die and tell the group your score. The men with the highest score were paid more money. The game was arranged so the men could lie, and no one would be the wiser. The Atlantic reports that while men in both groups lied, those who were given testosterone lied reported significantly lower payoffs than the placebo group, suggesting that they lied less, which is, realistically, all anyone can hope for.
