Starting to Run, Slowly, and Persevering Magnificently

In this inspirational piece of writing in the New York Times, reporter John Schwartz chronicles his effort to make running part of his life. It started slowly, and not without humiliations. “Graybeards pass me,” he writes. “Teenagers pass me. A pregnant runner has passed me. Once, on a blazing afternoon in Austin as I ran along Lady Bird Lake, I noticed that the two women who had just passed me were walking.”

Finally, and triumphantly, Schwartz tells us that he’s “not going to try to prove anything when I run. I’m just running, and I want to keep doing it. …So if I have to prove something to myself, I’ll do it at work by writing better articles.”

Problem is, artitlces don’t get much better than this.

I thought this was a great article in the Times! I loved his honesty and attitude about not caring about his time or who passed him. He is happy to run and start his day on a positive note. Loved it!!

  3. I loved this article! His honesty and attitude about not caring how fast he runs or who is passing him. He starts his days off on a positive note…a peaceful run. Love it!! Keep it up!!

  4. Mr. Schwartz is slowly and successfully proving anyone can take up proper exercise, in this case running, in spite of all the intimidating hype about what you have to do before starting.
If more people follow his method we will have less obesity in this country!
I hope he writes more article about his running adventures.

  5. I can’t comprehend not wanting to compete and get better everyday, but my compliments on the initiative to begin and the dedication to continue.
