Alcohol Reduces Rheumatoid Arthritis Risk

It's true. When researchers at the University of Sheffield (Yes, it's in England) compared the drinking habits of 873 patients with rheumatoid arthritis to 1004 people without the condition, they found that non-drinkers were four times more likely to develop RA than people who drank alcohol on more than ten days a month. PhysOrg.com reports on the study, which is published in Rheumatology, and which also found that people who had drunk alcohol most frequently had symptoms that were less
severe than those who had never drunk alcohol or only drunk it
infrequently.

  1. Bovine excrement! And a rather large pile of the same…
I am reminded of the supposed “natural cure” of putting raisins in a jar and soaking them in alcohol for several days and then eating them as a cure… It did not work but when you’re good and drunk you don’t feel the pain (until you sober up and then your knees, ankles, etc. ache and you have a hangover).
The only population that appears to be more out of shape than that of the the USA is that of the UK and, to top it off, they have a national drinking/alcoholism problem that is even effecting the very young, nine and ten year olds.
I’ll choose to stay sober and deal with the pain.
By the way, have these researchers ever heard of gout?

  2. I have had RA for 15 yrs. and I have found that a few
glasses of red wine or a couple of beers, or a shot of
wiskey has a numbing effect on the pain, and it helps
me to rest, which is the key to manage the pain, but
remember moderation, to much of anything can hurt you
worse. Kinda like the medications they prescibe that
destroy your liver and kidneys. Steroids have shut down
my thyroid gland, now I have to take a hormone for that.

  3. Right on!
