Geezer knows a few people who happily spend the kind of money on a bike that he spends on cars. OK, they spend a few dollars more, but the bikes are new and Geezer’s cars are not. Why do they do it? One answer–actually, several answers– can be found in this piece in the Los Angeles Times. Hard-core riders, the Times reports, say it isn’t ego-driven bike lust that causes them to
invest that kind of money in a bike. For them, it’s about comfort,
efficiency and dialed-in handling. Others call it the Lance Armstrong effect â€â€because his seven wins of the Tour de France has brought road bike racing to
the attention of the general public. And finally, there is age: our age. The Times tells us that aging
baby boomers with bad knees and the cash to spend on fancy bicycles are
now taking up road cycling as a low-impact alternate to running for
cardiovascular exercise.
