Exercise Before Sleep: Good or Not Good?

Geezer has heard lots of complaints from friends who believe that their late night basketball or hockey games render them walking founts of adrenaline. Many of these friends seek to neutralize the adrenaline with carefully administered bottles of cold beer–the best way, they say, to get to sleep. Geezer, who has invented dozens of more credible excuses to drink beer, has long harbored some doubts, and so he was pleased to read in the New York Times that scientific studies have failed to link exercise before bed with troubled sleep. The Times reports on one study, also cited in About.com’s Sports Medicine section, that put athletically fit subjects through exercise routines both one hour before bed and three hours before bed, and found that sleep was not adversely affected by either. Both the Times and About suggest, however, that sleep might be affected by exercise in people who are not as fit as the subjects tested. What to do?
Try exercising in the evening: If you can’t sleep, open a beer.

  1. Ok so let me get this right, if you excercise and can’t sleep just drink a beer and go to bed? When you excercise your insulin levels drop along with your blood sugar. When you drink beer the liver is temporarily toxified and cannot release glucose. Bear in mind that glucose levels are generally lowest in the morning. What does Excercise + Beer + Sleep = ? HYPOGLYCEMIA, which in itself can wake you up and keep you from sleeping.

    I’ve been doing it for about a week now
    50 crunches
    25 left leg lifts
    25 right leg lifts
    15 pushups
    then i crawl right into bed.
    and I’ve found i actually sleep better.
    O__o
    as in, getting to sleep, then not waking up 50 times at night.
    Aha, i have sleep problems
    so even if i get to bed late
    if i sleep from that time on, it was a good night’s sleep. xD

I am a very tense person with ADD usually if I lie down to go to sleep other thoughts crawl through my mind and I can’t sleep. often I have found that both exercise and a beer (meaning either and time dependent) have helped me to feel quite relaxed and I can usually sleep much easier and feel rested in the morning.

  6. Not much point in the exercise then if your having a bear after is there really?
    Thats like me going on the atkins diet for a day then rounding it off with a mcdonalds.

  8. yes exercise before sleep gives a very sweet sleep. Also it is suggested not to take bear, alcoholic products 3-4 hrs. before sleep.

  10. Smoke a bowl, makes you sleep, doesn’t mess with sugar levels or calories that increase triglycerides when the body is at a rest state.

  11. I disagree with the beer Before going to sleep you should do yoga. That is if you exercized and you feel like you cannot sleep. I do that all the time, I come back from hockey or I come back from the gym and right before sleep I do 15 minutes of yoga, with some soft music and i’m good to go. Oh one more tip, this may sound somewhat babyish but drinking warm milk along with that yoga helps a lot! Way better than beer, and healthier too fully packed with Calcium!
