This encouraging piece in the New York Times points out that a personal trainers, usually exercise physiologists or former professional athletes, are no longer in short supply. There are, apparently, two reasons for that:
1. Coaching is hip. There are now 1,420 USA Triathlon-certified coaches in the U.S., up from 8 in
1997, and the number of coaches certified by USA Cycling has increased tenfold since 1999.
2. Coaching is done online. The Times reports that the majority of coaching, these days, is done over the Internet, with programs like Training Peaks software, which can
transfer data from heart rate monitors and report how workouts went.
What’s the price? Anywhere from $39 to $1,500 a month, depending on the services provided.
