Working Through Sports Injuries

Leslie Bonci, director of sports nutrition at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, has some interesting advice those of us who are recovering from sports injuries.  Bonci advises her patients to sprinkle a little turmeric onto salads, soups, vegetables, meat or poultry. Why? Because there’s growing evidence that the yellow herb it has some of the same anti-inflammatory properties as Vioxx (no longer on the market) and Celebrex, without the side effects. Bonci and Thomas Papke, a spokesperson for the American Physical Therapy Association and a former consultant to the Oakland Raiders, talked to Washington Post columnist Sally Squires about the best ways to work through non-serious sport injuries. Recommendations include “RICE”–rest, ice, compression, elevation, keep moving, let pain be your guide, add protein, and more. Read the whole story.

  1. And that’s why I never wanted to become a professional sportsman though I’m a good cricket player. I simply can’t afford injuries.
