Sugar Cane Extract Lowers Cholesterol

Could the country that produces the world’s tastiest rum and most coveted cigars make something that’s actually good for you? Why would they want to? Geezer doesn’t have all the answers, but he can respond to question number one. Yes: Cuba is the world’s largest producer of policosanol, an apparently healthful mixture of alcohol compounds — mostly octacosanol —
extracted from the waxy coatings found on leaves and stems of plants, in this case sugar cane. The Los Angeles Times gives us a quick look at the benefits of policosanol, which, several studies have shown, can lower LDL cholesterol.  Readers take note: This stuff is all over the web, where it comes with lots of life-enhancing promises. The Times tell us two things we may want to consider before typing "policosanol" into Google. One: The only type of policosanol that is really proven effective in lowering LDL is that which is extracted from sugar cane. And two: Even that type of policosanol should be taken in limited doses. More won’t hurt you, but studies suggest that anything over 10 milligrams doesn’t offer any additional benefit.
