A Lap a Minute

Many people prefer sports that, like running or tennis or volleyball, can be halted without risk of death. Others like to swim.
Why? There’s simply nothing like it. The cool rippling of water on skin, the breathing-based rhythm of the stroke, the strange otherness of a medium that humans opted out of quite some time ago. Most swimmers have a hard time understanding why more people don’t get it. Others are glad they don’t, because if more people people swam, swimmers would never find an open lane.
In a smart and informative story published in the The Washington Post, Ruth Kassinger talks about why adults might want to think about swimming more, and how they can learn to do it better.

  1. Still, I don’t think most people swim a mile in 30 minutes.
