What You Can’t Catch From a Toilet Seat

Number one on the list of things you can’t catch from a toilet seat is- are you-ready?  Venereal disease. At least, according to Donald McNeil Jr., writing in the New York Timesimgres, there is no medical evidence that anyone has ever picked up a venereal disease from a toilet seat. Yet. McNeil recommends finding another explanation for your spouse, and by the way, good luck.  Number two on the list of things you won’t catch from a toilet seat is lice. McNeil explains that while lice can travel comfortably on woven materials, they don’t do well on cold hard surfaces like plastic and wood. What then can you catch from a toilet seat? Some bacteria and some viruses– antibiotic-resistant staphylococcus, norovirus, E. coli, shigella and streptococcus, to name five. What to do? If there’s feces of vomit, or anything that looks like it might be feces or vomit, on the toilet seat, McNeil says, find another toilet. He also points out that antiseptic wipes can kill 50 percent of germs.  Wait there’s more: even if the toilet seat is clean, flush handles, door latches, faucet handles, and towel dispenser handles are often not.
