Remember the promise of hip resurfacing, offered to many younger people with hip problems as a less drastic alternative to hip replacement? Forget it, especially if you’re a woman. A new study published in The Lancet claims that, with the exception of men with large femoral heads, resurfacing implants failed more quickly than hip replacements. Wait, there’s more warning where that came from: HealthDay quotes a Lancet news release quoting Art Sedrakyan, a professor at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City: “It is also vital to prevent use of the marketing term ‘young and active.’ Few patients, even if elderly and inactive, will refuse a device that is intended for the young and active.” Read more from HealthDay.
