Statins Make Exercise Harder

Two weeks ago, we learned that statins can lead to fuzzymindedness. Now comes another report from Tara Parker Pope suggesting that these “most widely prescribed drug in the world” can make it harder to exercise. Parker-Pope cites research showing that rats given Lipitor were unable to run as far as unmedicated cousins. She also tells us that an examination of muscle tissues of rats revealed that oxidative stress was increased by 60 percent in sedentary rats receiving statins, compared with the unmedicated control group. In running rats, the news is even worse: oxidative stress increased by 226 percent in the medicated animals. Bottom line, statins made running harder, and more damaging.
