One Fast Food Lunch Exceeds Daily Salt Recommendations For Those Over 40

Researchers from the New York City Department
of Health and Mental Hygiene were hungry for knowledge about how much salt New Yorkers were getting from fast food. The answer: too much. The subscription only Tufts Nutrution & Health Letter reports that the researchers studied the receipts for 6,580 lunches bought by ordinary people at 11 fast-food chains, then calculated the sodium content. The average salt content was 1,751 mg, approaching the dietary guidelines' 2,300 mg limit for an entire day, and more than the 1,500 mg the government recommends for everyone over age 40. More than half of the the lunches topped the 1,500 mg mark. The chains with the highest salt content were KFC and Popeye's.  McDonald's was the lowest.
