Exercise Shown to Reduce Anger

Does exercise A: relieve anger? B: stave it off? C: none of the above? Gretchen Reynolds, writing in the Well column of the New York Times, reports on a couple of studies that suggest that it can do both A and B. Reynolds reports that researchers at the University of Georgia selected 16 young men with “high trait anger” or, in less technical terms,
a very short fuse, and had them fill out a survey describing their moods and measured brain activity while the recruits were shown images intended to induce anger. On alternate days, the exercise was repeated while the viewers rode a stationary bike for 30 minutes. Reynolds reports that when the volunteers hadn’t exercised, their viewing of the slides aroused significantly more anger.  After exercise, conversely, the men’s anger reached a plateau.

  2. It took a study for this?

  3. This is obviously a deliberately skewed and twisted study due toe the way and manner in which the same was conducted.
Instead of using cyclist, use competitive weight lifters and bodybuilders who, in general, by the end of the their workouts are raging, pumped up, balls of aggression…and the close they are getting to a competition the worse they often become.
I’ve been back stage at national level competitions and wathced the severely carb depleted maniacs who otherwise are nice people fight over a light hand weight as they pump up…
Some reasearches have found the holy grail of research;ie., a funding source that pays them no matter what type of crap they produce…

  4. I am a former national level powerlifetrna d body builder, who has a long history (over fifty years) of various athletic competition.
Bill C., try as you may to cause me to become upset, you will not be able to do so as it would be usseless to act in such a manner and would not be beneficial to anyone, including this one’s own self.
This one does find it amusing that you, who seem to indicate that you might think of yourself as a “Christian” by you continued bible quotes are attempting to goad on another person whom you know nothing about… Such would seem truly “Christian” of you.
To assist you, this one will send you the merits of his meditation and his daughter, who professes to be a Hindu, will pray to Lords Sri Ssri Krishna and Rama for you.
    namaste, my friend.

  6. Bill C. as there is no verifiable, reliable or quantifiable evidence to support that a Yeshua bar Yusuf even existed ( and the occupying Roman Legions and appointed govenors we reupted as making notes about everything that was going on in the occupied land)I find that I am not overly concerned as to those who accept third hand accounts of Jewish, Greek, Summerian and Hindu myths as “Gospel” or who worhsip the dead.
The religious beliefs of anyone or the lack thereof, as long as the same serves to lead them to be persons of conscious awareness, demonstrated by acts of kindness and compassion as they strive to be beneficial to all is the choise of the same said person.
However, it is commonly understood in online conversations that to type or post with the Caps Lock on is considered “shouting”, and rude behavior of an aggressive nature. Perhaps you are unaware of the same or perhaps there are control, ego and/or other issues you are dealing with…
Oddly, the majority of your post seem to have nothing or little to do with the article they follow and your opinon, to which you are entitled often show a lack of understanding of the subject being discussed.
You have even presented your self as a “doctor”, which I can’t imagine being a Ph.D. and I sincerely hope, for the sake of any patients you might have, that you are not a medical doctor…
Be that as it may, it is up to the administration of Geezer as to who post here and as to whether or not they allow continued rants such as yours, directed towards any and all individuals to remain.
Do what you choose, my friend, however, be aware that karma is real and what goes around comes around, as it is said.

  7. Pick up a copy of Harvard Medical School psychiatrist John Ratey’s book, “Spark: Exercise and the Brain.” Hard aerobic (maybe the brain chemistry is different with anaerobic, e.g., weightlifing) exercise is proven to increase endorphins (feel good chemicals) in the brain. No suprise anger is diminished. You have to wonder if all of us had to take a six mile run every day that we’d have a more harmonious world. We’d definitely be in better shape.
