High End Bikes Hit High Gear

Who knew that New York Times science writer Gina Kolata (yes, we’re afraid it does rhyme with Pina Coloda) was a cycling fiend? In this story, Kolata confesses her love high speed and hard seats, and offers some interesting numbers. Did you know, for example, that a serious bike is going to cost from $3,000 to $9,000? And did you know that a 125-pound woman riding for one hour at 18 mph is going to burn 555 calories? OK, now do the math. If that woman spends nine grand on a bike and rides it one hour a day for 100 days, how much does it cost to burn one calorie?
