The Web, like New York City if New York City were free, has something for everyone. It even has a few things for reasonable people, people who do things in, OK, moderation. Have a look, for example at Slackpacker.com, the website for those who, as the site puts it, like nothing more “than a day in the wilderness, except perhaps, a day in the wilderness followed by vitello saltimboco in a four-star restaurant.” Slackpackers, the site explains, are people who love to hike, but don’t love to carry 60 pounds on their backs for several days of unwashed travail. They are day hikers,–adventurous, but not nuts. Sounds reasonable, and this site is a real gem, with an exceptional selection of hikes in every state and several countries, plus special sections of bouldering, geology, orienteering, and geocaching. We love it, but then we agree with whoever it was who said “everything in moderation, especially moderation.”
