Ever wonder what your wife really thinks about your fitness obsession? New York Times opinion writer Jessica Grose offers some clues, and no, they’re not what men were hoping to hear. Grose’s own concerns began with her husband’s attraction to fitness greens, progressed to his minor obsession with protein, and more mysteriously, cold showers, all of which began to make some kind of sense when she realized that he was following the guidance of Andrew Huberman, an associate professor of neurobiology at Stanford who hosts a podcast called “Huberman Lab†and has over four million Instagram followers. The most interesting offering of Grose’s column is a quick and mildly disturbing history of Americans’ evolving opinion of men’s fitness through the second half of the 20th century. What we are left with is a couple of uncomfortable questions: When do fitness goals become obsessions, and when do we cross the line from healthful activities to unhealthy vanity?
