OK, Mikaela Shiffrin, at age 26, is only halfway to sports geezerhood, but we can all take something (at least inspiration) from her workouts. Sports Illustrated reports that the ski racing champion values a good night’s sleep more than any particular exercise. What about the work part? She does that everyday, basically all day, starting with a half hour of warmup and hitting the slopes by 8 a.m. Serious conditioning exercises start after lunch, and after a quick nap, and lead to a film review of her recent runs, with several eyes searching for a way to shave a second, or microsecond, off her times. Shiffrin and her coaches are data freaks, and they monitor several factors that can suggest ways to maximize her energy level. Diet is a biggie, and on most non-race days Shiffrin prefers lean proteins, salads and vegetables. For athletes, even amateurs, of any age, it’s a promising routine, especially the nap.
