In every sport, there’s speed and there’s quickness, and in every sports bar, there’s some turkey who will be pleased to explain the difference, without speed or quickness. So it’s refreshing to hear from a professional trainer who unapologetically conflates the two, and who tells Men’s Health that, with proper training, speed and quickness can cranked up to a whole new level. To do that, Juan Carlos Santana recommends two drills. In one, the athlete takes a lunging step forward as far as possible, reaching forward and touching the floor. Repeat five times, then try it with five-pound dumbells. In the other, the athlete sets a small object on the floor two or three feet from her body, then squats on one leg and tries to touch the object with the opposite hand. Do ten reps and switch legs. Confused? Geezer is too. The pictures in this Men’s Health piece are worth a thousand words. Check em out. Quickly.
