Gmaps Pedometer, Google’s Big, if Unintentional, Gift to Bikers, Hikers and Runners

Even when Google owns all of the money in the world, it’s going to be very hard to hate the company, because their efforts allow creative hackers to build fabulous things like  Gmaps Pedometer. Here’s how Gmaps Pedometer works: Go there, zoom in to find a map or satellite image or (recommended) hybrid of the two that includes a favorite hiking, biking or running route. Click the “recording” button and double click on the starting point. Move your cursor along the route, double clicking whenever the route changes direction. The application automatically computes the mileage of the route and will also compute, albeit roughly, calories burned by those who are running the route. Maps can be saved, permalinked, sent to friends, whatever. Sure, it takes a few minutes to figure this out, but once you do, it’s almost too good to be true. Here, for example is a running route outsite Boulder posted by Steve Outing on Poynteronline’s Media Tidbits. Maybe the Internet really will change everything.
