Eat Plants, Save Your Brain

Eating more plant-based foods and less red meat in our middle years may reduce the risk of cognitive impairment further down the road. That verdict comes from researchers at the University of Singapore, who reviewed the dietary history of more than 17,000 people over a period of 20 years. Futurity reports that the study suggests that diets rich in plant-based foods—including whole grains, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and legumes—and low in red meat and sugar-sweetened beverages, reduce the risk of cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. People with heavily plant-based diets appeared to reduce the risk of cognitive impairment by 18 to percent, compared to those who had red-meat heavy diets.
