Geezer has some bad news for runners who think they can take it slow during their daily workouts just because no one is watching: someone will be watching, from inside your shoes. The New York Times reports that Apple is now making running shoes that will send data about the wearer’s performance to an Apple Computer iPod using a new wireless system called Nike+iPod. With help from a Nike+iPod Sports Kit that will retail for about $29,
consumers will get information on time, distance, pace and calories
burned through the earphones of an iPod Nano via a sensor in the insole
of special shoes that communicate with the digital music player. The truly obsessive can transfer collected data onto a Nike Web site, nikeplus.com.
Geezer will not be among that latter contingent. He believes that, despite the creepiness of wearing shoes that spy on us, this technological advance is probably a good thing for serious runners, and it is definitely a challenge for those of us who live to game the system. What kind of performance, for instance, would the shoes would report if you put them in the dryer and let them tumble on "perm press casual" for 40 minutes while taking a short nap?
