The Fittest Fitness Trackers

The Wall Street Journal offers its opinion of four popular fitness trackers with particular focus on which is good for what. For versatility, the Journal likes the Misfit Shine 2, which tracks steps, calories, distance traveled and sleep quality, and has an app that can log specific activities such as swimming, basketball, tennis, soccer, yoga and dancing. Wait, there’s more. The Misfit Link app, available for iOS and Android, can control apps on your phone and smart devices around your house. Price: $100. Next up is the Journal’s choice for adventurers, the Garmin Fenix 3, which tracks runs, bike rides, swims (yes, it’s waterproof, somewhat) and mountain climbs. It has a heart-rate monitor, and GPS, and it can monitor nuances of your movement—providing metrics like ground-contact time, cadence and vertical oscillation. Price: $500. For “easy to read data” the Journal likes the Fitbit Charge HR, whose app for Android and iOS will provide real-time heart-rate data while you’re exercising (measured once every second) as well as when you’re at rest (measured every five seconds). It can also map runs on your smartphone. Price: $150. Finally, for simplicity, the Journal chooses the Runtastic Moment, which tells you how close you are to reaching a daily goal, and whose Android or iOS app lets you view more complete data on steps taken, sleep quality, distance traveled, calories burned and any running and cycling you’ve done. Price: starts at $129.
