Sense Of Purpose Lowers Heart Risk

imagesWant to know how to lower the risk of an unhappy cardiovascular event? Convince yourself that you are useful to others. That’s the suggestion of a study conducted at Mt. Sinai St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital, New York. Science Daily reports that an analysis of data from 10 studies in the United States and Japan that correlated health to sense of purpose and involved more than 136,000 participants, showed a lower risk of death for participants with a high sense of purpose in life. The Japanese studies assessed the concept of ikigai, translated as “a life worth living.” After adjusting for other factors, mortality was about one-fifth lower for participants reporting a strong sense of purpose. A high sense of purpose in life was also related to a lower risk of cardiovascular events.
