Can beer help keep Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease at bay? It’s not as crazy as it sounds. Science Daily reports that researchers at Lanzhou University in China are convinced that the anti-oxidative powers of xanthohumol, a compound found in hops, could protect the neuronal cells of the brain, and slow the development of disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. The research, reported in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry, consisted of lab tests that demonstrated the protective powers of xamthohumol. Bonus points: the compound is also believed to have anticancer properties and to provide some cardiovascular benefits.
