Sugar is sweet on the tongue, but when it comes to the heart, not so much. Researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston have found that the glucose metabolite glucose 6-phosphate (G6P), which can accumulate from eating too much sugar, can stress the heart in ways that change the muscle proteins and can lead to heart failure. A UT news release reports that the heart damage was discovered when doctors analyzed tissue taken from patients at the Texas Heart Institute who had a piece of the heart muscle removed in order to implant a left ventricle assist device.
