Just 20 minutes of Hatha yoga can improve brain function immediately after, and it does it better than 20 minutes of aerobic exercise. That’s the conclusion of researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. A news release from the school reports that the researcher Neha Gothe measured reaction times and accuracy on cognitive tasks of 30 women immediately after the women did 20 minutes of yoga, and also after they did 20 minutes of exercise. The yoga session consisted of seated, standing and supine yoga postures that included isometric contraction and relaxation of different muscle groups and regulated breathing, and concluded with a meditative posture and deep breathing. The exercise involved walking or jogging on a treadmill with the goal of maintaining 60 to 70 percent of her maximum heart rate throughout the session. The researchers found that the women showed more improvement in their reaction times and accuracy on cognitive tasks after yoga practice than after the aerobic exercise session.
