Bloomberg To New Yorkers: Take The Stairs

The mayor who outlawimages-1ed smoking almost everywhere, banned trans fats in restaurants, and required posted calorie counts on menu items has some new advice for his constituents: take the stairs. The New York Times reports that New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has issued an executive order requiring city agencies to promote the use of stairways and use smart design strategies for all new construction and major renovations. What’s it mean? Among other things, the mayor says, the new strategy has to do with making the staircase a more prominent part in the design of a new building or retrofitting an old staircase to ensure that it stays open, clean and well lighted. Bloomberg has also created a new nonprofit organization, the Center for Active Design, to promote and advise on strategies that encourage daily physical activity and access to healthy food.  What do you think? Good idea or bad idea?

  1. He’s courageous as a health leader. Nobody like being forced to exercise, but sedentary modern life is making us sick.

  2. Commendable idea, but good luck with getting people to use the stairs.
