It is true, a new study finds, that some forms of vitamin E, mainly those found in vegetable oil, protect us from some cancers. The research, which was conducted at Rutgers, suggests that gamma and delta-tocopherols – found in soybean, canola and corn oils as well as nuts, do appear to prevent colon, lung, breast and prostate cancers. What does not prevent cancer, unfortunately, is the vitamin E in the vitamin E supplements that many people take for cancer prevention. Wait, it gets worse. According to a Rutgers news release, one of the largest prostate cancer trials ever done has shown that the most commonly used form of vitamin E supplements, alpha-tocopherol, not only did not prevent prostate cancer, but significantly increased the risk of this disease among healthy men. Hold the supplements. Pass the vegetable oil.
