The DASH diet, named recently as the best overall weight-reduction plan by U.S. News & World Report, is now, some might say “finally,” available in as a book. As Rich Barlow writes on BU Today, the diet was conceived as a way to control high blood pressure, not weight. Then several studies revealed its effectiveness with weight control, among them a Boston Medical Center review, and last year, U.S. News & World Report rated DASH more effective on that score than such popular diet plans as Atkins, Jenny Craig, and Slim-Fast. Barlow tells us that DASH is similar to the Mediterranean dietâ€â€which tied for third in the magazine’s rankingsâ€â€and emphasizes eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, exercising, and avoiding high-fat, high-sugar foods. Are there any books on how to safely gain weight? I don’t want to be chugging cream or cramming bagels down.
