Men Want To Win; Women Want Team Love

Want to be a better competitor? If you’re a man, focus on beating a single person you’re competing against. If you’re woman, try thinking of yourself as an important member of your team. Researchers at Michigan State University have determined, unsurprisingly, that male and female athletes respond best to different motivations. Put bluntly, men want to win, women want to be needed. A Michigan State news release reports that the researchers, who studied performance data from college and high school runners and swimmers, also found that weaker team members are more motivated when working with others than when working alone. That’s right, those who fared poorest in individual races showed the greatest gains when performing as part of a team, and those gains were even greater during final races.
