Gretchen Reynolds explains in the New York Times that researchers at the University of Illinois studied four groups of mice: one group lived in luxury, eating cheese and fruit and playing on many toys; another had the same luxuries but also had a running wheel; group three almost nothing, just kibble; and group four mimicked group three but had a running wheel. When the researchers gave the mice cognitive tests, the mice with running wheels performed much better than those without running wheels. The food didn’t matter, the toys didn’t matter, the only thing that made a difference in brain power was the running wheel. Read more in the New York Times.
