How To Burn 200 Calories in 150 Seconds

Want to to burn 200 calories in 150 seconds? Divide the 150 seconds into five 30 second periods, and pedal as hard as you can on a stationary bike during each period. A news release from the American Physiological Society reports that researchers at the University of Colorado Anschultz Medical Campus compared the energy burned by volunteers on two different days, one when they did intense intervals of sprinting on a stationary bike, and one when they did not. The volunteers did five 30-second sprints on a bike set at a high resistance, each separated by four-minute recovery period, during which they pedaled slowly. When the researchers analyzed the riders’ calorie burn, they found that the volunteers burned an average of an extra 200 calories on the sprint interval workout day, despite spending just 2.5 minutes engaged in hard exercise.
