Fitness Requires Only 1.5 Percent of Your Time

The American College of Medicine recommends that adults do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise each week. How much is that, compared to how time we have? Yikes! Writing in his Get Moving blog, Dr. Adam Naylor,  of  Telos Sport Psychology Consulting and  Boston University’s School of Education, points out that there are 10,080 minutes in a week, which means that fitness requires only 1.5 percent of your time. That’s it. Naylor also reminds us that the ACSM allows for the fitness 150 to be spread out over 3 to 5 days and can even be taken 10 minutes at a time. Something to mention, or not, the next time someone says they don’t have time to exercise.

  1. Most of these calculated recommendations are poorly derived. After taking into account working, sleeping, commuting, eating and washing up you have about 4 hours of free time a day. Probably 6 on the weekends. That 150 minutes works out to about 10% of available time.
