SportsGeezer readers with good memories know that resistance training is the best way to keep muscle on our bodies. Now comes research from Paraná Federal University in Brazil suggesting that weight training does the job better if it’s combined with fish oil supplements. The study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, compared muscle strength and functional capacity before and after three months of strength training in 45 women age 64 or older. The women were divided into three groups, two of which were given two grams daily of fish-oil supplements, with one group starting the pills 60 days before the training began. The researchers found that all of the women showed muscle improvement, but the two fish-oil groups improved more. Only those getting fish-oil supplements showed improvements in electromechanical measures of muscle performance. Read an abstract of the study here.
Sounds fishy. I love it! More benefits from supplementation.
