A month after researchers learned that red wine appears to cut the risk of stroke, a new study suggests that the pleasing beverage may also help to keep us thin. A Purdue University news release reports that piceatannol, a compound found in red wine, grapes and other fruits, and similar in structure to resveratrol, can block cellular processes that allow fat cells to develop. The researchers found that piceatannol actually alters the timing of gene expressions, gene functions and insulin action during adipogenesis, the process in which early stage fat cells become mature fat cells.
