Trail running, basically running through woods, fields and deserts even though no one is chasing you, has been growing like Topsy. According to the American Trail Running Association, there were more than 1,500 trail running events in 2010, up from only 400 events ten years earlier. What’s it about? Writing in A Beginner’s Guide to Trail Running in ZenHabits, Matthew Frazier explains the appeal: Running like a wild man or woman through the woods nurtures the soul. Also, says Frazier, and perhaps more importantly, Getting dirty makes me feel way more badass than I am. Frazier offers these seven steps for first time trail runners:
1. Find a Trail
2. Slow down, and take short quick strides.
3. Don’t be afraid to walk the hills.
4. Scan the ground five to ten feet in front of you as you run.
5. Keep a distance of ten feet from other runners.
6. Watch out for slippery roots and rocks.
7. Be safe. It’s not called ‘the wild’ for nothing.
