Why Father’s Day Should Be About Sex, Napping, and Red Wine

Why should father's day be about sex, napping and red wine? Because all three are good for your health, and better health means better fathering, possibly. The New England Research Institute reported last year that regular sex appears to be good for your heart, at least if you're a man. Researchers at the institute followed more than 1,100 men for more than 16 years, and found that men who had sex twice a week were as much as 45 percent less likely to suffer a dangerous cardiovascular event than those who had sex once a month or less. Read an abstract of their research in the American Journal of Cardiology.

After sex, the concerned father might make an effort to maintain healthy blood pressure by taking a short nap. Or a long one. How do we know that has any influence of blood pressure? Because researchers at Allegheny College divided 85 healthy college students into two groups and gave one group the chance to nap for up to an hour after taking a mental stress test in the lab. PhysOrg reports that the researchers found that daytime naps seemed to rejuvenate the students who were able to sleep, and that the nappers had much lower blood pressure readings on average than those who didn't sleep.

Still concerned about remaining healthy enough to be a good dad? The truly caring father might consider a glass (or two) of red wine. The Scientific American has reported that resveratrol–one of several antioxidants found in wine–has been shown to help human cells break down a harmful molecule that has been linked to Alzheimer's disease. The story reports that the Pinot Noir grape offers more resveratrol than others, but that it's still unclear if any amount of wine can combat Alzheimer's. But what kind of father would take the chance?
