What Will Biking To Work Get You?

As Bike to Work Week begins, virtuous readers may wonder how many calories they would burn if they left the car in the garage and rode to work. The short answer is: it’s complicated. To keep it simple, E-How reports that an average 140-lb. person burns about 508 calories riding a bike for an hour at a moderate pace. People who weigh less will burn fewer calories; heavier people will burn more calories riding the same distance. Biking to work will also get you to work, which is good or bad, depending on where you work. And it will set you up nicely for some late afternoon exercise: your ride home.

    It’s vary variable. According to FitLinxx, the YMCA exercise tracking application, I burned over 4000 calories last Sunday riding 100 K (63 miles) in a little over 4 hours, with quite a bit of climbing, averaging 15.1 mph. Sounds like too many calories for that amount of riding, but maybe. I weigh 150.

    According to Fitness Yugoslavia if I track my 26 inch wheels at 72 revolutions per minute I will burn .0856 calories per minute providing I do not make any up hill climbs more than 45 degrees and have no down hill runs longer than 3.78 seconds per minute. However: If the inflation of the tires exceeds the proper rating I will reduce the amount of drag and therefore not get the full calorie reduction benefit. We are assuming of course that we are not heading into a headwind of less than average speeds of up to 10MPH. After that I head to the ice cream store.

    I ride a road bike & according to garmin forerunner 305 I burn 1000 per hour at avg speed 16 mph. Of course you eat more when you exercise.
