Uncertain about which wine to order for your next excursion to the space station? A new study from the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Research strongly suggests a red. Science Daily reports that scientists studied two groups of rats who were placed in simulated weightless environments, where the animals would ordinarily suffer from several complications, including a decrease in soleus muscle mass, insulin resistance, and a loss of bone mineral density–the same complications that are associated with a sedentary lifestyle. One group of rats was given resveratrol, the healthy ingredient found in red wine, and one group was not. Science Daily reports that the rats fed resveratrol showed none of these complications, and writes that "This study also suggests that resveratrol may be able to prevent the deleterious consequences of sedentary behaviors in humans." Worth a try.
All you rats drink up!
