The 10,000 Steps A Day Formula For Fitness

Quick, how far is 10,000 steps? The geographic answer is five miles, but the physiological answer is "Far enough to keep you in good health, if you take those steps every day." The Boston Globe reports on the 10,000 steps a day formula for health, which bubbled up a few years ago after the Journal of the American Medical Association published a meta study of 26 smaller studies of exercise and health. Wait, there's more: The print version of the Globe includes a handy conversion table that gives us step equivalents of several activities. Freestyle swimming, for example, equals 115 steps per minute; rowing equals 180; cycling equals 180, and yoga comes in at 60.
