Swearing Off Soap

Here's a question one could be forgiven for asking about the growing trend to give up soap: Why?

Because, no-soapers point out (correctly), triclosan — a chemical found in most anti-bacterial soaps –is known to alter hormone regulation in animals. Its effects on humans are unclear. Also, no soapers say, with the exception of washing hands, you don't need soap. Now GOOD, "a collaboration of individuals, businesses, and nonprofits that produces a magazine, videos, and events" is pushing the movement forward with a "challenge not to use chemicals in the shower." The deal apparently involves some but not all GOOD staff, but it is kindly extended to the rest of us. Interested?

  1. To get antibiotics, i have to go to a doctor and pay $200 for a prescription, but Proctorscope and Gamble can just stick them anywhere they want. This country needs an enema.

  2. Not(antibiotics!) Its Anti-bacterial! Their is a lot of difference here Mr.Dover. But that’s alright Sir,we all make mistakes. And you are right about one thing, this country could use a good enema! Starting at the White House! Have a Blessed Day Sir.

  3. There is absolute merit to the fact that continual usage of chemicals of any kind, on the skin, and for sure the very porous area’s around our fingers, our ears, mouth, etc… whether from food, cosmetics, soaps, laundry detergents, hair products, and deodorants, in particular antiperspirants, which interfere with our bodies need to do a vital thing, and no matter whether it is a topical use or ingestion, eventually it will cause some sort of problem or worse. Our bodies were never meant to be slathered with this stuff. We have programed ourselves into thing this way, and supporting an industry created for a need that didn’t exist, unless one could be made to think it does. And this new industry, born of the chemical age, and the thinking behind it, that propels it forward, is making us as sick and as unhealthy as we can possibly be, not to mention our environmental deterioration. Evidence has shown, warning labels tell, statistics confirm, plus your hearing it here… where did we go so wrong?

  4. A story about soap and we have to listen to ignorance and politics. Wonderful.

  5. Um, there’s plenty of soaps that don’t contain anti-bacterials. Also, please keep the dirty, smelly no-soapers away from me!

  6. This interest in triclosan is based on one study from 2008 that has not been recreated. Although it may be possible that triclosan is harmful to humans in some way, there isn’t any real reason to believe so currently. And if you’re that concerned about it, just use regular soap, which does not contain triclosan. I’m not sure why you would quit soap altogether because one kind of soap may be harmful.

  7. Hay Ron! John Wayne once said,(“Life is hard; Its harder if you’re stupid!”) Have a Nice Day!

  8. Our used up layers of dead skin, our sweat that carries impurities out, and the natural bacteria that causes body odor are all water soluble. With just hot water and a washcloth used for scrubbing, you can actually become clean. Imagine that! You won’t even smell, unless you are using a municipally treated water, in which case you will smell like you just got out of the swimming pool, at least for a while. But really, “clean” does not have a smell. And that aroma we have been hoodwinked into believing we need to smell like in order to project a belief we are clean, is actually some very complex concoctions of chemicals which are NOT clean. Hey! Who started this crazy thinking anyway? Talk about being stuck on stupid!

  9. Bill C. says I’m stupid because I object to the constant non sequitur political responses to totally unrelated articles. These reactions are epidemic and represent a severe imbalance in thought processes. Unfortunately, this seems to be the new normal. Pretty sad.

  10. I didn’t say you were stupid,I gave you a quote from John Wayne. But if the shoe fits wear it! Your quote-(an we have to listen to ignorance and politics.)That Sir is what you said about us,talking about sever imbalance in the though process. So I’ll give you another quote in line with your though process.”Better to be silent and be though a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt! Have A Nice Day!

  11. Gosh I hope my sometimes frequent ranting hasn’t caused any grief here. I’m happy to have a place to comment against certain industries, beliefs, and practices that have been created largely from the rhetoric in the advertisement of, and countless and sometimes senseless studies funded by same, to support those industries that are sucking the wealth right out of this Country, in the name of ever increasing greed for profit, at the expense of the health and well being of it’s Citizen’s and consumers. For me, this is not Political, I’m simply passionate about the subject of trading, for a price, the health and well being of many in Society, at least the shrinking majority as this article suggests, that are not willing to bother looking into, or are not able to know, for whatever reason, whats happening and why. I am careful not to attack an Individual, but only the “machine” doing the harm. I realize I will seem ignorant to some, I’m ok there. I know my little bit of knowledge in the great scheme of things is really nothing. Just don’t attempt a debate. And you don’t have to listen. Read, or don’t read. But sorry Guy’s! I have to write. It’s too important to me knowing that some will read. 😉

  12. GO Doug! Its not you Sir.It was Ron talking about us. And I would like to apologize to RON.”Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it.” And I over reacted, sorry Ron,and may you have a Blessed Day!

  13. Gosh, I’m sorry too Ron and Bill. Hey guy’s, like it or not, we are all in this together. I know we can disagree agreeably. We are all rowing from the same boat, just different sides.
I appreciate all I’ve learned from anyone. I’ll try to harness the passion, and be a little less vocal.
Hope we all have a great day!
