Who knew that the old chestnut about fish being brain food would turn out to be true? Perhaps fish eaters did. According to research presented at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America, they’re smarter than the rest of us, but only if their fish is not fried. Science Daily reports that when researchers studied the dietary habits and did radiological scans of the brains of 260 people over a period of ten years, they found a clear positive association with gray matter volumes in several areas of the brain. Greater hippocampal, posterior cingulate and orbital frontal cortex volumes in relation to fish consumption reduced the risk for five-year decline to cognitive impairment or Alzheimer’s by almost five-fold. The researchers also found “increased levels of cognition” in people who ate baked or broiled fish. Wait, there’s more. People who ate fried fish got zero protection from cognitive decline.
