Seven Superfoods, Plus, a Definition of “Superfood”

No, superfood is not food that is able to leap a tall building in a single bound. It is, according to Emily Gelsomin, clinical nutrition specialist at Massachusetts General Hospital, who is quoted in the Boston Globe, “foods that are high in nutrients that optimize all of the body’s systems, immune system, digestive tract, etc., helping the body function at its maximum capacity.” The Globe asked Gelsomin to list a few. This is what she came up with:

Salmon: Omega 3s

Beans: Fiber, protein, and healthy bacteria

Yogurt: Healthful probiotic cultures

Quinoa: Essential amino acids

Prunes: You know

Almonds:  Calcium, vitamin E

Brussel sprouts: 12 nutrients, including folate, vitamin K and vitamin C.
