Post-Workout Calorie Burn Lasts and Lasts

Thinks of it as a gift that keeps on giving. The calorie burn of rigorous workout apparently doesn't stop with a cooling shower. The L.A. Times reports on a study published in the ampersand heavy Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, in which 10 healthy men, age 22 to 33, exercised vigorously for 45 minutes while researchers measured the calories burned. The 45-minute workout on a cycle ergometer burned an average 519 calories, but wait, there's more: In the 14.2 hours following the exercise, calorie expenditure was higher than it was on days when the men did not work out, burning another 190 calories.

  1. Great news, thanks for sharing this Sportsgeezer! I love figuring out how many calories I burn in any workout I do (currently mostly squash and running), but now I realize all those bonus calories really add up!
