No, researchers at the University of Scranton, Pennsylvania, are not kidding when they argue that potatoes are more healthful than many alleged health foods, with blood-pressure lowering power similar to oatmeal. Web MD reports that scientists at the school studied 18 overwieght and obese people with high blood pressure, who either ate six to eight small purple potatoes (about the size of a golf ball) with the skins twice daily or no potatoes, as a part of their normal diet. After just four weeks, those who ate purple potatoes lowered their diastolic (the bottom number in a blood pressure reading) blood pressure by an average of 4.3 percent and systolic (the top number) by 3.5 percent. How do potatoes do it? Easy, the researchers say. The generally over-salted and over-greased tubers contain a variety of potentially beneficial phytochemicals at similar levels as broccoli, spinach, and Brussels sprouts. Note well: while the potato eaters in the experiment ate red potatoes, the researchers think red and white pototoes may have the same remarkable powers.
Being Irish and in love with the state of Idaho, I expected as much. What took our “scientists” so long to learn basic facts. Is it their ignor(ance)? I’ll bet the same nerds believe there is no supreme power too… Booo Science!
Well said. Our scientists seem to change their minds daily about their so-called discoveries. If someone doesn’t believe in God I have to admire their faith. It takes more faith to believe there is no God than it does to believe that He exists.
i agree to that doc…seems like the only tell us what we want to hear.
Too damn bad that white potatoes are worse for blood sugar than just about anything! White rice, white bread AND white potatoes are worse than sugar for us type 2 diabetetics
