In research that brings to mind the joke about a redneck's last words: "Hey y'all, watch this!," researchers at the University of Oklahoma have determined that a "culture of honor," a mostly male mindset that places a high value on defending one's reputation at any cost, "is linked with high rates of accidental deaths." HealthDay reports that study author Dr. Ryan Brown, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Oklahoma, found that "the dangerous male mindset is also more prevalent among those living in the South and West, in such states as South Carolina, Texas and Wyoming." How does he know that? Brown compared rates of accidental deaths (car accidents, drowning, over-exertion and so on) in all U.S. states. He found the so-called "honor states" had higher rates than non-honor states (such as New York, Ohio, Wisconsin). In Brown's estimate, more than 7,000 deaths a year can be blamed on risk-taking linked with the "culture of honor." The behavior was most common in more rural areas of the honor states. In the cities of honor states, there was a 14 percent higher accidental death rate than in the cities of non-honor states, and in the smaller towns of honor states there was a 19 percent higher rate compared to non-honor states. HealthDay reports that Brown also surveyed 103 college students from his university, including 79 women, measuring the extent to which they subscribed to the culture of honor. A sample statement to which they agreed or not was: "A real man doesn't let other people push him around." Yes, the more the person subscribed to a culture of honor, the more likely they were to engage in risky behaviors.
Thanks for giving us some good and positive news for a change. At least these dumb ass`s won`t be “breeders” bringing yet another generation of idiots into the World!
This only proves that some men still have balls!
The gist of the story is if you value honor and self-respect you are stupid and you will die young in essence the new idea is established values are inverted. Be weak, fearful, take no risk you’ll be smart and live long so that you can work for a long time and depend on those who value honor and take risk they will supervised us and own us and serve on our army.
I really don’t see that at all. The gist of the story is that young bucks who think they are invincible are more apt to die when challenged by their friends.
This has nothing to do with bravery or ‘honor’, it has everything to do with macho and bravado.
This just shows that most of your know nothing, knuckle dragging piano moving macho men are meatheads and from the country. Give me the citylife and a healthy self esteem.
This article confuses stupidity with honor.
Honor is: “A gift that you give to yourself. It is all that you have when you are alone with G_D.”
In other words your honor is your integrity!
There are so many things wrong with this article. In the first place, our Dr. Brown is teaching AT the University of Oklahoma, right in the heart of his targeted area. His survey of 103 persons included a lopsided percentage of women, 79. They are hardly qualified to judge in the first place being of the opposite sex and likely not a very large percentage of the populace whom are now dead. Then there is the statement “Hey y’all, watch this!”. That is honor?? That is not honor, it is bravado. Ever live in a one horse town where pure physical strength is a major consideration for employment, like hauling hay the old fashioned way? That is akin to being a foor soldier where men are judged by their prowess in hand to hand combat. Bravado is one thing; defending one’s self from being pushed around is another. Take the defense portion of the survey out and the bravado portion likely shrinks to such a lower percentage it is almost not worth writing an article about. I suspect Dr. Brown is a short, slender, “Casper Milquetoast” type man whom is fighting back for a portion of his life when he was forced to eat mud. I agree that in any event all these things are more likely to take place in the one horse towns and backwoods areas. There is little in the way of culture there. If you don’t play football, or paintball, or shoot pool, or see who can drink the most without getting drunk, there is little else to do. But to confuse honor with bravado is apples and oranges. I know, I grew up in these kinds of places.
wHY DINHONOR TRUE HONOE WITH BROVADO OR MACHOISM..??? lOOKS LIKE A “RESEARCHER” WAS LLOING TO PROVE SOMETHING. pROBLEM WITH THIS KIND OF “sCIENCE” IS THAT THE MOST PROBLEMATIC FACTOR IN THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD WAS NOT HEAL ACCOUNTABLE… tHE REASEARCHER HIMSELF…
dEFINITION OF hONOR AND bROVADO PLEASE… think!
stay in the city , we don’t need or want you in the country life.
